Artist Statement
This is a body of work spanning my sophomore and senior years of undergraduate study at the University of Connecticut. The black and white film photographs were taken of friends, capturing the intimate relationship between subject and photographer without exploiting their vulnerability. To be photographed is to give a slice of your moment in time. You trust that the photographer is seeing you as you want to be seen. My woodblock prints are the imaginings of a budding intimate relationship. I explored the importance of how hands connected us. Shaky, quick single-line contour drawings carved into wood show exactly how I felt: unsure, delicate, unmoored – and yet I was unwavering. This work tells the story of conversations between friends. Of steadfast admiration, of the feeling of fingertips tracing the lifelines on her palms. And how both sides of this spectrum are a reflection of truth.
